Charles Brockden Brown Society: Charles Brockden Brown and His Female
The Charles Brockden Brown Society invites papers on Brown and his female
contemporaries. While Brown’s engagement with European Enlightenment
thinkers and American political philosophy has been well documented, his
interest in female thinkers and authors and his relationship to their
careers are less known. For instance, Brown’s and Susanna Rowson’s
professional careers have interesting similarities that remain relatively
unexplored; they both authored Gothic familial narratives, historical
romances, and sentimental stories of loss and love in the first half of
their careers, and edited periodicals in the second half. These
similarities between Brown and Rowson (and others) will illuminate more
fully the profession of authorship at the end of the eighteenth century and
the beginning of the nineteenth century. This panel hopes to explore how
Brown’s career and work intersects and engages with his female
contemporaries, like Rowson, Murray, Wollstonecraft, and others. Please
send 250-500 word abstracts to Jennifer Desiderio at
by January 15.
