Abstracts are invited for a proposed special session at the 2009 MLA
Convention (to be held 27-30 December in Philadelphia). This session
seeks papers which explore aesthetics and cultural politics in Victorian
poetry. Because of its dense and complex linguistic experimentation and
structural ambiguity, Victorian poetry foregrounds the inseparability of
the epistemological and the discursive to the degree that it is
distinctive among cultural forms of the period and not merely one among
many. Varying theoretical accounts of both Romantic and Victorian poetic
form have been offered (for instance: Wolfson, Esterhammer, Armstrong,
Slinn). Still, despite this important earlier work, few Victorian
poetry critics have developed these ideas. The panel welcomes
historicized analyses of poems which demonstrate biographical,
historical, cultural, and theoretical frameworks and processes of
signification. Accepted panelists will be notified by 25 March and must
be MLA members by 7 April 2009 (please visit Send 1-page
abstracts to Linda M. Shires ( by March 2. Queries before
that date are welcome.
