Amsterdam has always been a locus of powerful imagining, and for
centuries the city has been the subject of representation in literature,
music, and the visual arts. Yet while artists and writers have long
emphasised the city's reputation for permissiveness and tolerance, in
recent years the international image of Amsterdam as the paradigm of
an "open society" has been charged with new significance and urgency.
Against the backdrop of the "war on terror", an increasingly polarised
debate has taken place about multiculturalism and about new, global
challenges to our Western models of capitalist democracy. In this context
Amsterdam has emerged as a privileged site of representation which

This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary project seeks to investigate
and explore the enduring influence and imagery of monsters and the
monstrous on human culture throughout history. In particular, the project
will have a dual focus with the intention of examining specific ‘monsters’
as well as assessing the role, function and consequences of persons,
actions or events identified as ‘monstrous’. The history and contemporary
cultural influences of monsters and monstrous metaphors will also be examined.

Papers, reports, work-in-progress and workshops are invited on issues
related to any of the following themes:

Call for Papers

Our society bombards us with deception: false reports, embellished
testimony, misleading advertising, and that which goes unsaid. But are we
really being lied to? Or is the truth hiding underneath the deception, and
is it up to us to actively bring it to light?

We invite contributions from postgraduates across the disciplines in the
Arts and Humanities. Topic areas should reflect the interdisciplinary theme
of the conference. Suggestions may include (but are not limited to):

This session seeks to explore the ways in which death, dying, or the denial
of death show up in modern to contemporary Irish literature. Papers may
include studies of the practices of and attitudes toward death and/or
memorialization, the link that exists between living and dying, the
contradictions and paradoxes that exist in attitudes towards death, the
ways in which the finality of death is denied, avoided, or confronted in
life, etc.
