DEADLINE EXTENDED: New Victorian/Caribbean Connections 5/15/09
Proposals are invited that explore connections between Victorian and Caribbean novels that have not heretofore been put in conversation with each other. Proposals should be 300 words and submitted by 5/15/09 to Marc Muneal, Emory University (mmuneal@emory.edu).
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
-The Bildungsroman in both contexts, and how issues of personal and character development shape and are shaped by society, family, and self
-Questions of female subjectivity and voice "beyond Bertha," as applicable to character, narrator, author, and reader
-the emerging middle class in 19th-century Britain and the 20th-century Caribbean
-Writers writing about writing
-Victorian and Caribbean moralit(y/ies)
-Reading practices and issues of audience
-The role of music in society
