The Institute for Comics Studies is soliciting proposals for presentations, book talks, slide talks, roundtables, professional focus discussion panels, workshops and other panels centered around comics or comics related areas of study for Wizard World University—Philadelphia and Wizard World University—Chicago, the academic tracks of Wizard World Comic Book Conventions.

Panels that include participation by comics industry professionals are especially encouraged. ICS will provide assistance with recruiting professionals for participation in WWU panels.

Proposals are invited for papers on Cult Adaptations for a symposium at the Centre for Adaptations, Faculty of Humanities, De Montfort University, Leicester UK on Wednesday 25 November 2009. Papers will be welcome on any aspect of the cult / adaptation interface, including:

Screen adaptations of cult novels, comics, TV etc
Adaptations that become cult
Theorising cult, adaptation, audiences and cinephilia
Novelisations and other spin-offs from cult films, TV etc., including remakes and sequels

Proposals of 200 – 500 words for 20 minute papers should be emailed to Ian Hunter: iqhunter@dmu.ac.uk. The deadline for proposals is 1 September 2009.

The journal "Jura Gentium Cinema" is seeking reviews (between 5000 and 10000 words) for the American-Kuwaiti movie "Amreeka" by Cherien Dabis (AKA "Amerrika" (Fr)), winner of the Fipresci Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

The review should particularly address the gender and postcolonial dimension of the movie. The review should be informative and evaluative, without being dismissive: that is, the reviewer should find some value in the work being reviewed.

The session "Voices and Voicelessness" proposes to examine the uses of speech, both salvific and illicit or idle, in late medieval literature in light of recent scholarly interest in the plurality of ways in which speech was understood throughout the late medieval period -- as one of the five chief senses, a force for good and evil, a form of touching, an outward expression of an inner state.
