"Eighteenth-Century 'Englishness' in German: 'Engellands delicater Bücher-Geschmack kan schon eine gute Meynung von diesem Buche erwecken'"

Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 18-21, 2010

Seminar description:
German literary history commonly emphasizes the eighteenth-century "discovery" of the English book and English culture. This seminar explores German constructions of the "new world" of Englishness in a space long dominated by Frenchness. Across the long eighteenth century (roughly 1680 to 1815) what was the work that "Englishness" accomplished in German-language literary, philosophical and material texts? Jointly, papers will consider how older maps of literary history may be recharted to account for transnational topographies.

Deadline for submissions: 21 September 2009 (participants will be notified by 30 September 2009)

Please send proposals up to 500 words for 20-minute papers as an attached Word file to the seminar organiser,

Bethany Wiggin,
