Space and Place in Early Modern English drama

After a very successful conference entitled "Early Modern Dramatic and Literary Spaces" at California State University, Long Beach this past November, the organizers are proposing a collection of essays. (Conference program and details are still available at

The conference categories were:
-Global Space: from the Globe theater to global travel
-Recovering Space: early modern reception, modern reconstruction, critical empathy
-Space Travel: bodies in space and time, materiality, historicity, modernity
-Making Space: early modern writers describing and creating secular, sacred, public, personal, and domestic space(s)
-Shakespearean Space: does Shakespeare show a unique spatial awareness? Do we "read" Shakespearean spaces uniquely?
-Space and Genre: tragic, comic, and romantic space.

Preliminary collection categories are:
-Locating places of/in performance
-Theorizing places in/of performance
-Spaces within: Shakespeare
-Gendered spaces in drama

This call is for additional essays that would work in any or several of the categories listed above. Please send full length essay drafts or at minimum 8-page seed/position papers by January 20, 2010. Decisions of the inclusion of essays and the status of the collection will be made by the end of January.
