Jamesian Afterlives I: Henry James as a Site of Cultural Production.

This panel invites proposals for papers considering surfacings and circulations of James's works and of his figure in culture high, low and middlebrow. Topics might include: varying constructions of "Henry James" at different historico-cultural moments; cinematic, theatrical, musical, or other adaptations of works by James; recent novels in which he appears as a character or a point of reference; James on the internet; "Henry James" as cultural capital; the rhetorical functions of "Henry James" in various discursive contexts; 21st century Henry James. Jamesian Afterlives II: Henry James Among the Theorists.

From Poulet, Todorov and Cixous to Deleuze, Butler, Bhabha, Sedgwick, Bersani and Zizek, Henry James has been a persistent presence in the discourse of literary and critical theory. This panel invites proposals for papers exploring: James's deployment in particular theoretical texts or in the work of particular theorists; his value or function for specific theoretical schools or enterprises (e.g. phenomenology, feminism, queer theory); the relation between the theorists' James and James as theorist; and/or broader meditations on the implications of James's attractions for, and surfacings and circulations among, the theorists.
