CALL FOR PAPERS
With Pen in Hand: Let's Talk About Text
Virginia Tech English Graduate Student Conference
Saturday, February 27, 2010

We respond to text in all its variety with strong, raw emotions. Additionally, as graduate students, we are expected to expand our emotional reactions to text in cultural, historical, and theoretical groundings. This year, our conference takes a cue from popular music to talk about text in surprising and unexpected directions. We want to see the fresh and innovative ways you represent our disciplines (Rhet/Comp, English Literature, Creative Writing) in the classroom, in your scholarship, in the writing you put into the world.

Pynchon's California

With the publication of Inherent Vice (2009) it becomes possible to speak of Thomas Pynchon's "California novels." Unlike Pynchon's pagemonsters, which are set around global historical crises, The Crying of Lot 49, Vineland, and Inherent Vice are set in California in the present or recent past; they are also shorter and somewhat more traditionally plotted, and two revolve around Pynchon's only female protagonists. Two of his longer, globetrotting works, Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day, also wind up in California. Papers are invited for this proposed panel on any aspect of Pynchon's "California novels" or his use of California as a setting in his writing.

The academic journal Meridian critic (The Annals of Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava, Literature Series) invites submissions for its first issue in 2010, dedicated to Utopia and Dystopia. Man's perennial concern with bettering the world, as well as the anxieties at the potentially regressive nature of the utopian ideal – always attended by an indelible ambiguity –, has generated a wealth of creative manifestations, claimed variously by literature and the arts, by history, philosophy, sociology, etc.

In the wake of the digital revolution and globalisation policies the whole world is witnessing formation of certain conditions which are having and will continue to have tremendous impact on the production, reproduction, access, dissemination and appreciation of visual arts. While the old art forms and artworks are being revisited and reproduced in wholly new ways and for a variety of purposes, new types in the forms of digital arts are surfacing not only on the internet but also every place of our visual culture. The place and workplace of the artist also has undergone a radical change.

The Arrest of Henry Louis Gates Abstracts due: January 10th or earlier. Contact: qmiller@suffolk.edu I'd like to invite scholars to participate in a panel at the ASA convention in San Antonio next fall (Nov. 18-21 ) on the infamous arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. last summer. I am unsure of the format of the panel: it will depend upon the number and type of responses I receive. Those of you familiar with the ASA convention know that the organizers favor panels that are interdisciplinary, and that they encourage a variety of presentation formats (from roundtables to traditional papers and everything in-between).
