The eighth biennial Thomas R. Watson Conference in Rhetoric and Composition solicits proposals that examine the working of rhetoric and composition in the era of the globalization and localization of English.

The second decade of the twentieth century saw the publication of two landmark studies that were to change the approach of poets and scholars alike: Jessie Weston's From Ritual to Romance (1920) and James Frazer's The Golden Bough (1922). Both works collected and analyzed a series of legends from different cultures and emerged with a specific pattern of such a ubiquitous nature that it appeared to have the status of an archetype. Neither would be possible at the start of the twenty-first century.

Cinema Studies Student Conference, Spring 2010

The Intellect published and academic refereed journal 'European Journal of American Culture' (EJAC) invites new submissions for its 2010 issues. The journal welcomes articles that tackle American cinema, television and videogames, music, art, literature, politics and history based around the exploration of American culture. We are open to special issues that bring together two to three significant pieces on one common theme, or equally standalone pieces. Articles are to be 5-8,000 words in length and can be either single discipline or interdisciplinary in nature. Book reviews are also welcome.

The Programs in Italian Studies and Renaissance Studies are pleased to announce a joint Graduate Student Conference on April 24-25. The Keynote Speaker will be Dale Kent, Professor of History, University of California-Riverside. Professor Kent is a renowned historian of fifteenth-century Florence and is currently working on The Vocabulary of Power in Early Medicean Florence, a study of social, political and artistic patronage and the relations between them.

The British poet and painter Mina Loy (1882-1966) lived in Italy, France, Germany and the United States, taking part in or conversing with Futurism, Surrealism, New York dada, and engaging in productive aesthetic dialogue with Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Marcel Duchamp, William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, Mabel Dodge, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. Loy's poetry and visual production call for an interdisciplinary approach which may account for the multiple cultural forces encroaching on her work and enabling its complexity to emerge.
