PANEL: Visual Narratives and Illuminated Manuscripts

Drawing from the works on text and image from Visual Culture scholars, this panel aims to undertake the task of understanding and analyzing this multifaceted art form, the illuminated manuscript. All papers addressing the various aspects of the fraught and complex relationship between text and image in the illuminated manuscripts (from Medieval to the Renaissance period as well as Eastern illuminated manuscripts, i.e. Turkish, Arabic, etc.) are welcomed.

As service-learning projects become more widely used in the humanities classroom, we start to consider more seriously the pedagogy of service learning and the best ways to reach out to students participating in service learning projects. One way we can facilitate service learning is through the use of new media. This session will discuss the use of new media (such as podcasting, video podcasting, wikis, blogs, websites, social media, etc.) as a pedagogical tool in the service-learning humanities classroom. I seek to organize a panel of four or five presenters to explore the uses of new media in service learning projects.

For a special issue of Interdisciplinary Humanities, we seek academic papers from a broad range of disciplines that address utopian/dystopian literature, historical attempts to create utopia, or the philosophical writings that underpin each of these efforts. We will also consider creative fictional engagements of utopian themes and creative non-fiction essays about utopia. In particular, this issue will explore the definitions of and boundaries between Utopia and Dystopia.

Making Connections: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Cultural Diversity solicits essays from any discipline, poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction essays, and original artwork (we print in black and white) related to the theme "An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Frederick Douglass" for our fall 2010 issue. Making Connections: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Cultural Diversity is a national journal published by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative. The deadline for this themed issue is June 1, 2010.
