Call for Papers: "Post/Colonial Nostalgia in South Asian Literature."

42nd Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
April 7-10, 2011
New Brunswick, NJ – Hyatt New Brunswick
Host Institution: Rutgers University

Svetlana Boym in *The Future of Nostalgia* (2002) identifies two types of nostalgia. The first is "restorative," containing conspiratorial and blame elements based on strict binarisms (they vs. us); the second is "reflective," leading to a "sense of not being able to go home again." Inspired by the current interest in the role nostalgia plays in constructing interpreting past memories and interpreting communal histories, the panel examines how South Asian authors, residing in the Indian subcontinent and / or in the diaspora, writing in the late 19th-21st century in Anglophone or regional languages, grappled with the post/colonial legacy of past empires, and how they made sense of present-day dilemmas in light of those legacies. How did early authors, writing in the late 19th-early 20th century, envision their colonial pasts, and did their nostalgia differ from the nostalgia articulated by subsequent authors?
