The 2011 International Conference of the T. S. Eliot Society of Korea: T. S. Eliot in the 21st Century

October 7-8, 2011
Korea University, Seoul, Korea

As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the founding of the T. S. Eliot Society of Korea, the Society holds its 2011 international conference on T. S. Eliot studies for the 21st century, and cordially invites papers for the conference. This conference aims to bring together scholars and teachers to discuss the state of Eliot studies, while offering new critical perspectives for the second decade of the 21st century. T. S. Eliot was a paramount figure of modern poetry and poetics, and a literary icon in the first half of the 20th century. According to a special issue of Time, June 1998, the "most celebrated English-language poet of the century" was T. S. Eliot. He was a key figure in the modernist canon and a precursor of postmodern perspectives. The release of new primary material such as The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry (1993), Inventions of the March Hare: Poems 1909-1917 (1996), and The Letters of T. S. Eliot Vol. I (1988, 2009) & Vol. II (2009) opened up fresher views on Eliot. Other publications, notably T. S. Eliot at the Turn of the Century (1994), The Early T. S. Eliot and Western Philosophy (1999), T. S. Eliot and Our Turning World (2001), T. S. Eliot's Civilized Savage (2003) and Postmodernism in T. S. Eliot's Major Poems (2010), along with biographical works and feminist reevaluations have shed a new light on Eliot studies. This conference will further endeavor to reexamine the oeuvre of T. S. Eliot, poet, literary critic, dramatist, and philosophical thinker.

The keynote speaker of the conference will be Professor Jewel Spears Brooker, Former President of the T. S. Eliot Society of the USA. Professor Akira Nakai, President of the T. S. Eliot Society of Japan, will also deliver a speech on Eliot among others.

Please submit a 500-word proposal and your curriculum vitae by December 31, 2010, via e-mail to Professor Yangsoon Kim, Vice-President of the T. S. Eliot Society of Korea at angelakim@korea.ac.kr. The Organizing Committee will evaluate all submissions carefully, and respond by e-mail on or before February 28, 2011. The T. S. Eliot Society of Korea will provide local expenses (local transportation, room and meals for the duration of the conference) for all international participants traveling to Korea to attend the conference.
