The Dark Man: The Journal of Robert E. Howard Studies, a peer-reviewed journal sponsored by the Department of English at the University of La Verne (California), welcomes papers on any aspect of the life and work of Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan, Red Sonya, Solomon Kane, Sailor Steve Costigan, and many other pulp characters from the 1930s. Essays on the various cinematic and comic book/graphic novel adaptations of Howard's characters and stories are also welcome. In addition, essays on writers associated with Howard—such as H. P. Lovecraft, L. Sprague de Camp, Lin Carter, and so forth—will also be considered, but the connection to Howard's life and/or work should be a prominent element of the argument and analysis. At this time, reviews of books related to Howard's life and work are assigned by the editors; however, they will consider proposals for potential books to review.

Article submissions generally should not exceed 30 pages (although exceptions may be granted) and should be formatted as a Word document according to standard MLA style. Manuscripts, book-review proposals, and/or questions can be e-mailed to Associate Editor Jeffrey Kahan at or to Gene Melton at Please mention The Dark Man in your subject line.
