CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Voice in Theory/Voice in Practice
Association for Theatre in Higher Education 2011 Conference
CFP Deadline: 29 October 2010

The organizers of "Voice in Theory/Voice in Practice" invite scholars, practitioners, and scholar-practitioners to participate in a multidisciplinary working group on the voice as construed in critical theory and as applied in performance training. The panel's goal is to initiate discussion across the theory-practice divide. An affiliation with specific schools of theory or voice training methodologies is not required. The organizers recognize the potential value of adding demonstration and/or performance to the discussion, and they especially seek participants interested in working outside the traditional paper presentation model.

Participants will be asked in advance to read 3-4 foundational texts on the voice drawn from the traditions of continental philosophy and Anglo-American voice training techniques. Participants will then be prompted to circulate short (1-2 page) responses to these readings in advance of the conference. The panel itself will take the format of a guided roundtable/ workshop, and may also include vocal-pedagogical demonstrations as useful and appropriate.

If interested, please submit a CV and 250-word statement of interest explaining why discussions across the theory/practice divide are interesting and/or professionally useful to you. Please submit these materials to BOTH Joseph Cermatori at and Clare Hane at by 29 October 2010. (Questions can also be sent to the organizers at these email addresses.) Selected applicants will be notified of their acceptance to the session by 30 October 2010.

The final panel will be proposed to an interdisciplinary set of focus groups for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education's 2011 conference. The 2011 theme is "Performance Remains, Global Presence: Memory, Legacy, and Imagined Futures" and the conference will take place from 11-14 August 2011 at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.
