The Chesnutt Association will sponsor two sessions at the American Literature Conference, Westin Copley Place, 10 Huntington Ave., Boston MA 02116-5798, May 26-29, 2011
Session 1: Chesnutt's use of subplots, minor characters, and/or settings in his novels, especially the lesser known works (Mandy Oxendine, A Business Career, and Evelyn's Husband, for example), but not excluding his well-known novels or his short stories. One might consider the following in relation to the topic: theme and narrative structure; the context of social, political, and economic issues; Chesnutt's use of satire; race and gender issues; integration of literary genres for particular purposes, etc.

Subject: This edited collection seeks to publish recent scholarship that examines various aspects of Mike Leigh's life and career as a writer-director by scholars from a variety of disciplines employing a range of critical methodologies. These essays will cover all phases of the BAFTA-award-winning director's career, including his early television work as well as his theatrical films, including Life is Sweet (1990), Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996), Career Girls (1997), Topsy-Turvy (1999), All or Nothing (2002), Vera Drake (2004), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), and Another Year (2010).

Opuscula: Short Texts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (OSTMAR)
is pleased to announce the official launch of its website.
We seek single-witness editions of Medieval and Renaissance texts under 6,000 words accompanied by a brief introduction (1000-1500 words) and translation. We invite submission of a broad range of pre-modern texts including but not limited to literary and philosophical works, letters, charters, court documents, and notebooks. Texts should be previously unedited and the edition must represent a discrete text in its entirety.

When an echo sounds, be it spoken, written, or acted, the repeated content takes on a new character. The Echoes Graduate Student Conference at Duquesne University seeks to engage academic communities in polyvocal dialogues, exploring echoes as they appear across disciplines, texts, and times.
'Civilization arises and unfolds in and as play' (Johan Huizinga, Homo Ludens). In civic entertainment, 'play' constitutes the primary formative element in human culture that affords and sustains common interest and amusement. Texts produced in the classical, medieval and the Renaissance periods document how the Church, the Court, and the citizens devise their 'play' in triumphal entries, court entertainment, civic festivals, religious rituals, processions, drama, m
usic and dance.
