Toni Morrison Society

The Toni Morrison Society is seeking individual paper proposals for two sponsored panels at the 2011 American Literature Association in Boston, May 26-29, 2011

Panel 1 Toni Morrison and the Gaze of Memory

This panel seeks papers that interrogate Morrison's complex use of "memory" such as the "rememory" of Beloved or the refusal to remember in much of Love. Papers that focus on related issues such as history, story, chronicle and recollection would be most welcome. Ideally we hope to investigate how Morrison engages both past and present in her complex narratives.

Panel 2 Masculinity in Morrison's Fiction

This panel seeks papers that explore the various and complex representations of masculinity in Morrison's fiction. Papers that examine differences and tensions between dominant and resistant or subordinated masculinities or Morrison's challenges to normative hegemonic masculine constructions, in both historic or current context, are especially welcome.

Abstracts are due January 15, 2011, and should be sent to jbilling@spelman.edu
