Call for Papers
Film Locations: Cities of the Imagination, a new film series to be published by Intellect Books, seeks contributors to the Paris volume.
This exciting new book series will explore and reveal the relationship between the city and cinema by using a predominantly visual approach inspired by The Big Picture magazine's 'On Location' feature.
The books will be visual collections of evocative and iconic film stills that places greater importance on the power of images over academically driven text.
The city continues to play a central role in a multitude of films, helping us to frame our understanding of place and of the world around us. Whether as elaborate directorial love letters or as time specific cultural settings, the city acts as a vital character in helping to tell a story.
As the rise and proliferation of modern cities have coincided with the development of film as a cultural medium, a symbiotic relationship has naturally emerged whereby it's occasionally difficult to separate the real from the imagined.
These are the issues that have prompted the Film Location book series and which we are excited to explore further, looking at questions such as:

How is cinema helping to shape our view of the city?

What is the role of the city in film?

How can we engage with and better understand different cultures through the medium of film?

Alongside short bite-sized texts of carefully chosen film scenes, each book will be illustrated throughout with evocative movie stills and be complimented by short but insightful essays about themes, ideas and key historical periods.

Film scenes for review will be carefully chosen for their relevance and connection to the themes discussed in the project synopsis. They should all be good examples of film scenes that place emphasis on that book's city as integral to story, character & cultural significance. Each review is 200-250 words each.
