Within the post modern context, are vampirism and race both free floating signifiers in search of a signified? Are they overdetermined signifiers, crammed with multiple significations?

This panel will look at race and vampire narratives in film, television, books, and other popular media. Topics could include: race in the Underwold series; re-evaluations of Blacula, Blacula Screams, and Ganja and Hess; Lafayette in "True Blood" and the Southern Vampire series; Octavia Butler's "Fledgling"; Jewelle Gomez, "The Gilda Stories"; Brandon Massey's "Dark Corner" and Steven King's "Salems Lot"; L. A. Banks' Vampire Huntress; Blade as vampire and vampire hunter.
