Literature and Young Adults: A multilingual and cross-cultural conference

Luxembourg, 20 - 21 October 2011

In the past decades, Young Adult Literature, or writing primarily aimed at teenage readers, has developed considerably and so has the critical debate on its characteristics, reception and role in the general field of literary studies.

This fast growing attention is reflected in numerous publications and conferences in many countries. On the one hand, the study of youth literature is a natural development of the well-documented interest in children's literature and, on the other hand, is often discussed in relation to crossover fiction, with an emphasis on adult reception of literature initially aimed at younger readers. Conversely, literature for adults offers many works that deal with issues of youth and growing up.

The conference organizers welcome contributions on a wide range of topics. They aim at promoting comparative and intercultural approaches to the choice of themes, subgenres, styles of writing, formats and theoretical issues. This includes questions of critical reception, translation, adaptation and publication marketing. The definition of a shared canon or set of internationally recognized works for young adults may also be discussed. Moreover, as these questions are of major interest to language teachers in secondary education, the conference will allocate space to workshops on pedagogical issues linked to these topics.

Submissions are invited in the following categories:

• Comparative and intercultural approach to youth literature
• Issues of reception, adaptation and translation (academic paper or round table)
• Themes of youth in literature across languages and cultures
• Pedagogical practice (description of practice or workshop)
• Other related subjects

Publication of the conference proceedings is planned.

This international and multilingual conference is organized by the Société luxembourgeoise de littérature générale et comparée, in cooperation with the Luxembourg Centre national de littérature and the University of Luxembourg.

Contributions in French, German and English are welcome.
