As the Presidential Theme for the 2011 MLA conference indicates, life writing is a critical element in the contemporary landscape of literary studies. The Boston College Biennial English Graduate Conference invites papers that investigate the many roles that life writing plays in the creation and analysis of discourse. Whether examining transnational narratives, ancient oral traditions, modern diaries and letters, or groundbreaking documentary film, the vast array of possibilities for life writing allows us to bring together distinct points of view in productive ways.

Subject: This edited collection seeks to publish recent scholarship that examines various aspects of Mike Leigh's life and career as a writer and director by scholars from a variety of disciplines employing a range of critical methodologies. These essays will cover all phases of the BAFTA-award-winning director's career, from his early television work to his theatrical films, including Life is Sweet (1990), Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996), Career Girls (1997), Topsy-Turvy (1999), All or Nothing (2002), Vera Drake (2004), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), and Another Year (2010). We are interested in receiving abstracts over the next few months, and completed papers.

The Paul Laurence Dunbar Society seeks proposals for an Open Topic panel at the American Literature Association Conference in Boston on May 26-29, 2011. We invite proposals on any aspect of Dunbar's career, or that focus on any part of his literary output: poetry, novels, short stories, correspondence, or essays. Proposals on Dunbar's relationships with other authors, editors, critics, or related historical figures are especially welcome.

There is no television show more in the public eye right now than the Fox hit Glee, and as season two begins this month, it's becoming more clear than ever that the show continues to explore contemporary issues impacting teens and society. Essays are needed for a collection on the television show Glee and Teen Culture (under contract from McFarland). This collection will investigate what the show's portrayal of teenagers suggests about teenage culture and society today. General ideas for essay topics includes some of the following:
