CFP: Shakespeare Readings; July 9-13, 2012 (deadline 5/15/12); Moscow (Russia)

The Shakespeare Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Shakespeare Readings, a biannual international conference co-sponsored by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Moscow University for the Humanities, is now accepting proposals for presentation at this year's meeting. This year's theme of "Shakespeare in National Cultures," invites considerations of any of the following topics, broadly defined:

- Shakespeare in production
- Shakespeare in translation
- literary criticism and studies
- artistic perception
- teaching and pedagogy

Please submit a 250-300 word abstract and a brief CV by May 15, 2012 to Nikolai Zakharov, nikoltine@yandex.ru.

Allegory (PAMLA 19-21 October 2012 - Seattle) Proposals by 4/22

Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association

This panel welcomes any paper on allegory as either a strategy of interpretation or a mode of literary construction. Especially encouraged are papers engaging with allegory in unconventional or theoretically challenging ways: finding allegory in unusual places; interrogating long-held assumptions; rethinking historical or contemporary critical discourse. Genre and period are open.

Please contact the organizer, Brenda Machosky, with inquiries or submissions. 50-word abstracts and 500 word proposals will also need to be submitted through the PAMLA conference site.

The wealth of material found in the Middle Ages and Renaissance continues to attract modern audiences in the form of with new creative works in areas such as fiction, film, and computer games, which make use of medieval and/or early modern themes, characters, or plots. This is a call for papers or panels dealing with any aspect of medieval or Renaissance representation in popular culture. Topics for this area include, but are not limited to the following:

-Modern portrayals of any aspect of Arthurian legends or Shakespeare

-Modern versions or adaptations of any other Medieval or Renaissance writer

-Modern investigations of historical figures such as Eleanor of Aquitaine, The Richards, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scotts
