Many scholars have noted Chaucer's insular Englishness, which is observable in The Canterbury Tales as well as his other works. Their assessment is partially accurate, since Chaucer characterizes his pilgrims as hailing "from every shires end of Engelonde." According to this description, the party apparently lacks representatives from Scotland, Ireland, Wales or Brittany. However, despite this initial appearance of English homogeneity, geographic and cultural others do appear on the margins of Chaucer's writing, including The Canterbury Tales and The House of Fame. The Franklyn's Tale is set in Celtic Britanny while The Man of Law's Tale features Scots who trouble the borders of Northumberland and England.

Seemingly, the history of humanity has fashioned itself on the tri-partite relationship between confinement, resistance and freedom. Each and every epoch has its own forms of confinement which are met with its own kind of resistance which may or may not be resolved with some form of freedom. Ironically, even after the first decade of the 21st century these concepts still play a prominent role concerning the human condition. One would think that centuries of accumulated human thought and development would have opened up new avenues of discussion.

Feminism has always found significant expression in creative
and critical literature, from poetry and pamphlets to modes of
the digital age: Twittering and blogging. Yet with its shifting
social and political manifestations, the term feminism itself has
frequently been seen to raise as many questions as supposed
answers, leaving it open to revision, contestation and new
expression. This conference seeks to examine the varied and
diverse ways in which contemporary women's writing since
1970 has engaged with and continues to respond to the 'the f
word'.

CFP: "Teaching War, Teaching Hemingway"

Rather than the typical single-text approach, Kent State University Press's Teaching Hemingway series will focus each new volume on pedagogical approaches to major issues in the author's works. This volume intends to explore the many intersections of teaching war, teaching war literature, and teaching the works of Ernest Hemingway. We are thus hopeful that our contributors and our audience will come to us from several academic disciplines. The target audience is teachers at the secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

CCTE welcomes scholarly papers, creative writing, and panels in literature and language, including linguistics, film, popular culture, rhetoric, composition, ESL, and teaching these areas.
