ACLA 2013 Seminar Call for Papers
From their ubiquitous presence in folktales and fables to their anthropomorphized appearance in Hollywood blockbusters, from Picasso's Guernica to the landscape of Iranian new wave cinema, animals threaten us, haunt us, position us in countertime. Recent years have seen an increasing scholarly interest in the relationship between the human and the animal, asking the question of how the animal has opened up new ways of looking at post-Cartesian understanding of subjectivity. As we encounter terms like zoontology, zoography, and animot in our discipline, the animal – a being and a construct – forces the human, as Derrida and Agamben have argued, to re-think ideas like sovereignty, politics, ethics and justice.

RAEI is a referred journal published once a year by the Department of English Studies at the University of Alicante. We are now seeking for the next issue "Performing Identity, Performing Culture" (December 2013) essays which aim at discussing the issues raised by the definition of performance and performativity in relation to the politics of identity and culture in current cultural studies. Over the last fifty or sixty years, a growing interest in performance discourse – with its emphasis on the body, that is, on human experience, practices and affections – has taken place, floating free of theatre precincts and extending itself to other disciplines, including cultural studies.
The submission deadline for this call has been extended to December 15, 2012.
The Duse Society—the graduate student organization of the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Theatre Arts—is hosting a one-day, interdisciplinary conference, Acts of Asylum. This conference coincides with the opening performance of the University of Pittsburgh Repertory Theatre's original, devised play City of Asylum Onstage. The conference will be held on April 5, 2013.
