William Dean Howells Society

The William Dean Howells Society welcomes submissions for two panels at the 2013 American Literature Association conference in Boston on May 23 – 26.

Deadline: January 7, 2013

Panel 1: The Short Howells

We are looking for papers that examine Howells's shorter works, including his literary criticism, poems, short stories, plays, travel writings, occasional pieces, and reviews. Though rightfully lauded for his novels, Howells was a remarkably sustained and prolific writer across genres throughout his career: how might his shorter works engage with typical articulations of his aesthetics and interests? Who is Howells the poet, the playwright, the letter-writer, the eulogist? Which works deserve more attention?

Locating Gender in Modern Jewish Literature (ACLA, 4-7 April 2013)

updated:
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 - 12:40pm
Melissa Weininger (Rice University), Efrat Bloom (University of Michigan)

With its turn away from religion and towards secular, Western culture, modernity upended many of the boundaries that have traditionally organized Jewish life, confounding private and public, home and study house, feminine and masculine. Modern Jewish writers contended with gender identities as these were implicated in a reordered social and cultural world and in the changing roles and expectations for Jewish women. Literature continually (re)constructed female subjectivities and at the same time has been constructed by them, making women as writers, subjects, and objects of representation central to the project of Jewish modernity.

"All Pulp" Journal Issue

updated:
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 - 10:41am
Australasian Journal of Popular Culture

The Australasian Journal of Popular Culture is seeking submissions of articles for an "all-pulp" issue. This issue will be co-edited by the journal's editor, Toni-Johnson Woods, and Justin Everett, area chair for Pulp Studies for the Popular Culture Association.

Our aim is to produce a truly international publication, and so we encourage articles that explore pulp in every nation! We are not limiting "pulp" to the American magazine tradition, but wish to include the pulp traditions of countries outside the U.S. which may include paperbacks, comics, and other forms as appropriate to that country's tradition. Please include as many images as is appropriate to your article.

Topographies of Popular Culture (25-26 Oct 2013; deadline 15 Mar.)

updated:
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 - 10:20am
University of Tampere, Finland

From the venues of rock festivals and theme parks to the back alleys of Gotham City, popular culture contributes to collective perceptions of spatiality and recreates powerful imaginary topographies. Topographies of Popular Culture offers a forum for multidisciplinary discussions of popular culture and space in contemporary American, European and Russian contexts. The conference seeks to explore representations of space as constructed in popular literary and visual genres and digital culture. We invite presentations that examine how space and various popular genres are mutually constitutive in producing "popular" places (physical, social, and imagined) in the cultural and geographical settings of the USA, Europe, and Russia.
