"Psychoanalysis and Media" (SCMS, Seattle, March 19-24, 2014) Deadline August 15
This panel invites proposals for papers that work towards complicating and exploring the intersections and problematics of psychoanalysis and media studies. Psychoanalysis has been crucial in the evolution of critical theory, and we contend that it remains a vital influence on contemporary discourse. We seek papers that address the ways in which psychoanalysis is a productive interlocutor, methodology, and object of study in the field of media studies. Papers could consider the tensions between the clinical practice of analysis and the use of psychoanalysis theoretically to discuss social and political questions. Additionally, papers might discuss questions of the psychic lives of media, affect, sexuality, race, and/or gender.
