Fahrenheit 451--call for contributors

As volume editor for a collection of new scholarly essays on Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 that will be published by Salem Press in its Critical Insights Series, I am entertaining proposals for the following:

a biographical sketch, around 2000 words;

an introductory chapter on Cultural/Historical Context, 4000-5000 words;

an introductory Compare-and-Contrast chapter, 4000-5000 words;

an introductory Critical Lens chapter of a close reading from a particular critical standpoint, 4000-5000 words; and

ten Critical Reading chapters on topics related to the work, author, or its themes, 5000 words each.

Contributors will receive an honorarium of $250.

CFP-Kzoo 2014 "I just don't want to die without a few scars": Medieval Fight Clubs, Masculine Identity, and Public (Dis)ord

Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club dramatizes group combat as a means for creating and performing masculine identity. Though composed hundreds of years after the last medieval tournament, Palahniuk's 1996 novel parallels a phenomenon similar to that governing conduct in medieval martial games. Such martial games posed a serious threat to public order, as Juliet Barker and Juliet Vale have argued, and this session builds on their work by extending analysis of medieval martial conduct to include the topic of masculine identity: how does an identity predicated by violence conflict with or bleed into the public sphere?

International Hoccleve Society

The International Hoccleve Society seeks to promote scholarly attention to the writings of Thomas Hoccleve, especially by providing a forum for reappraisals of and innovative approaches to his work. This year's session at the International Medieval Congress at Western Michigan University seeks to re-imagine Hoccleve's place in the literary landscape of medieval England by placing him in dialogue with authors other than Chaucer. Although no one has done more to place Hoccleve in Chaucer's shadow than Hoccleve himself, such critics as Derek Pearsall, Ethan Knapp, and John Bowers have done much to complicate our understanding of Hoccleve's relationship to Chaucer's work.

Contemporary cognitive theory recognizes the importance of the body to cognitive development, consciousness, and creativity, challenging the dualism that permeates Western thought. Medieval narratives that promote rejection of the body in favor of intellectual and spiritual cultivation, however, cannot be easily dismissed or simplified. Despite the scorn received, the body is essential to enlightenment as demonstrated by such key figures as Ælfred, Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe, Chaucer's myriad characters, and Thomas Hoccleve—to name a few.

This panel seeks a broad range of papers that explore how disability challenges normative, even ableist, constructions of the body-environment dyad. Broadly speaking, papers in this panel will survey points of connection between disability studies and ecological criticism. For example, how does disability-centered American literature (re)negotiate the relationship between embodiment and emplacement? How might life writing by people with disabilities contribute to a richer and more inclusive ecological criticism? How might we re-examine and deconstruct "canonical" American environmental literature through a disability studies lens?
