Call for papers. Locating Guyane: an international, multidisciplinary conference, 10-11 July 2014 (deadline 28 Feb 2014)

updated:
Tuesday, December 17, 2013 - 12:57pm
University of London Institute in Paris

French Guiana (Guyane française), overseas department of France in equatorial South America and 'ultraperipheral region' of the EU, consists of a land area equivalent to that of a European country, though boasts a population that would barely people a European city. The region seems to typify the "faultline between the large and the little" which Richard Price has attributed to Martinique, yet it remains on the margins of Antilles-dominated discourses of postcolonial/creole identities. This conference aims to explore the conceptual situation of Guyane, as a relational space characterised by dynamics of interaction and conflict between the local and the global.

"[Dis]Embodied Disciplines: Blurring Boundaries in the Academy"
Conference Dates: April 11-12, 2014, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ
Deadline for Abstract Submission: January 13, 2014

The body is a site where regimes of discourse and power inscribe themselves, a nodal point or nexus for relations of juridical and productive power. And, yet, to speak in this way invariably suggests that there is a body that is in some sense there, pregiven, existentially available to become the site of its own ostensible construction.
– Judith Butler

Trials, Transgressions, and Taboos

"Whenever a taboo is broken, something good happens, something vitalizing. Taboos after all are only hangovers, the product of diseased minds, you might say, of fearsome people who hadn't the courage to live and who under the guise of morality and religion have imposed these things upon us." – Henry Miller

The eighth annual AEGIS (Association of English Graduate Instructors and Students) graduate conference invites paper proposals on interdisciplinary topics treating trials, transgressions, and taboos in literature, cinema, the writing process, and popular culture and art.

Inter-disciplinarity, Multi-disciplinarity and Trans-disciplinarity in Humanities

updated:
Tuesday, December 17, 2013 - 9:47am
Erciyes University, Department of English Language and Literature, Turkey

Scope of the conference
Traditionally, multidisciplinarity draws on knowledge from different disciplines but stays within their boundaries. Moreover, interdisciplinary studies have focused on contemporary cultural constructedness, bringing to the fore key concepts, critical frameworks and fundamental research in different areas of investigation. Thus, inter-disciplinarity facilitated access to knowledge regarding theories and pragmatic research in contemporary issues and the conditions in which they emerged. Some major cultural debates were held, particularly those around globalization and technology which fundamentally affected the way we perceive race and ethnicity, gender, environment and broader aspects such as nation and society at large.

2014 The 5th International Conference on Translation and Cross-Culture, Nov. 15, 2014. Deadline March 2, 2014

updated:
Tuesday, December 17, 2013 - 7:42am
Center for Cross-cultural Studies of National Chengchi University, Taiwan

Ours is an era of translation and cross-culture. Transportation and telecommunication technology have helped shorten the distance and increase contact between person and person, nation and nation. Spatial "movement" through travel, tourism, migration, diaspora, and communication facilitates the "interaction" between "the (individual/collective/national) self" and "the other/other culture." Such "movement" and "interaction" depend much on linguistic and cultural translation to keep on "activation," continuously negotiating, realizing, and vitalizing ideas so as to renew and open up multicultural space.

Tuesday 29th – Thursday 31st July 2014

Call for Presentations
In 2012 the European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet its citizens are deeply disturbed by an atmosphere of concerns, fears and anxieties which form the horizon within which they live and work. Some of these are nurtured by real events whilst others appear to be rooted in imaginary or perceived phenomena. This inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary conference seeks to explore the issues which lie at the interface of fears and anxieties in the context of 21st-century Europe.

America and the Musical Unconscious [deadline extended]

Music is clearly one of the most important components of American culture, and of postmodernity generally. People are listening to music all the time; it's a new spatial form they are surrounded with, and I wish I could write about that and music generally."
