Literature about WWI is often associated primarily with men, especially with those who had first-hand experience of the war -- Ernest Hemingway, Erich Maria Remarque, Rupert Graves. War novels, great or otherwise, are usually defined as stories of battle, and war poetry similarly is thought of as written by soldiers -- Wilfrid Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, John McCrae (whose "In Flanders Fields" is perhaps the best-known war poem of all). That the Great War was not exclusively a manly undertaking, however, is evidenced by the participation of women in the war effort, both behind the lines as nurses, volunteers, and ambulance drivers and on the home front as administrative clerks and munitions workers.

The Graduate Theatre Syndicate at The Ohio State University proudly presents Position: The Power and Politics of Witnessing in conjunction with the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute and The Ohio State University Department of Theatre's production of The House of the Spirits by Caridad Svich. We are currently inviting proposals for the 2014 Graduate Theatre Symposium on February 28th and March 1st in Columbus, Ohio. Caridad Svich will deliver the keynote address. Proposals for traditional conference papers, workshops, performances and more interactive or experimental formats are welcome and encouraged.

I welcome abstracts for a panel on Virginia Woolf and religion, which I intend to propose for the 24th annual Conference on Virginia Woolf to be held 5-8 June 2014 in Chicago (http://www.niu.edu/woolfwritingtheworld/call_for_papers/index.shtml). I'm especially interested in papers on Woolf and religion that integrate the conference's theme of "Writing the World." Papers on Woolf's influence on the "worlds" of later religiously-engaged texts are also welcome.
