Writing Women's Lives in Early Modern Iberia and Beyond: SCSC, New Orleans, October 16-19 2014

Sixteenth Century Society and Conference (SCSC)

Papers sought for proposed panel at the SCSC (Sixteenth Century Society Conference) to be held 16-19 October 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

This panel will explore issues surrounding writing women's lives in and out of sixteenth-century Iberia and its empires. Papers may deal with specific writers or texts, or may engage more broadly with the genre and issues surrounding the writing of women's lives (biography, autobiography, hagiography, memoir, confession, etc., by both male and female writers).

Within the past 50 years, practitioners of cultural studies and the humanities more generally have addressed the question of hunger in terms of the immediate, individual body. For example, scholars such as Susan Bordo have considered the ways in which individual practices of self-imposed hunger (for example, anorexia and bulimia) have played a significant role in the maintenance of Western, patriarchal standards of beauty and heteronormative relations. Although this present study acknowledges the contributions made by earlier interventions such as Bordo's, it ultimately seeks to address the question of hunger within a wider, historical-materialist framework.

In order to solemnize the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the Institute of Comparative Literature of the Faculty of Arts of University of Porto will associate itself with government and city agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Porto City Hall that will carry a set of commemorative activities of the ephemeris. The aim of this Interdisciplinary Colloquium is to further discussion on the participation of Portugal in the Great War, through joint and coordinated reflection, beyond issues strictly related to historical-political matters, focusing on the various artistic fields, with special emphasis on the field of Literature. Visionary texts have shaped the world throughout history. Ancient philosophers, poets, and artists in every era have reimagined the world, and presented images that have inspired world-historical transformations. This conference will survey all manner of visionary texts (literary, artistic, musical, filmic), and examine how they have and continue to change the world. This conference invites a consideration of such influential interventions and their inspired visions in a wide range of historical periods and subject areas including, science, literature, religion, politics, art, and technology.
