CFP - Phenomenology Roundtable

updated:
Tuesday, April 8, 2014 - 7:50pm
PHENOMENOLOGY ROUNDTABLE

The Phenomenology Roundtable was founded at a meeting of the Radical Philosophy Assocation in November 2000, at Loyola University, Chicago. There, over coffee, several of us* gathered and discussed the lack of a space for doing phenomenology. We experienced the antagonistic and confrontational attitude of the dominant philosophical organizations; we bemoaned the lack of collegiality and constructivity in their meetings; and, most significantly, we noted the lack of a Husserlian starting point in most of the work of these groups. We decided we would form our own group aimed at a creative and supportive atmosphere in which we and other phenomenologists could discuss our work and interact with one another.

Sex and Reproduction in Irish Modernism--MSA 16 (Pittsburgh, November 6-9, 2014)

updated:
Tuesday, April 8, 2014 - 3:47pm
Daniel Aureliano Newman / University of Toronto

James Joyce once described the Irish artist as a "man without a sexual education." This proposed panel explores how a culture of silence and repression of sexuality, especially as it relates to reproduction, inflects and motivates Irish modernist literature. Of particular interest are papers on Elizabeth Bowen or the early work of Edna O'Brien, but all proposals on reproduction/sex in Irish modernism will be considered. Please send an abstract (max. 250 words) and a brief professional bio to Dan Newman (daniel.newman[at]mail.utoronto.ca) by May 2, 2014.

*This CFP is for a proposed panel for the Modernist Studies Association Conference to be held in Pittsburgh on November 6-9.

Messengers from the Stars - Episode III

University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES)

The first two editions of the Conference Messengers from the Stars (Episode I and II), organized in 2010 and 2012, gained a significant success. So, we announce a third conference dedicated to this subject. The several contributions of national and international participants (artists and academics), which were of high quality and interest, justify that we further develop this thematic line. This is a wide universe with international tradition and recognition in several areas of modernity. The national and international promotion of Science Fiction and Fantasy has gathered a widespread and varied audience, and fostered the open debate on theoretical and creative issues,
