Youth Culture in Contemporary Media

Please join us for the 36th annual conference of the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association, February 11-14, 2015, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Conference Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The theme for 2015 is "Many Face, Many Voices: Intersecting Borders in Popular and American Culture."
The editors of The Black Scholar welcome essays for a special issue examining the complexity of black cultural politics and identity in the Dominican Republic. This special issue seeks to analyze Dominican racial relations against the grain of the cross-disciplinary consensus, primarily U.S.-based, that focuses on Dominicans' "negrophobia," "anti-Haitianism," and "self-hatred." In this way, the issue inserts itself into a globally comparative Black Studies, including the articulations and disarticulations between blackness in the US, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
Pornography is the most transient of all media texts. Attempts to situate pornography within the realm of the private—because of increased internet accessibility, coupled with the closing of many metropolitan porn theaters—fail to recognize the porn text's ability to easily shift between private and public viewing spaces. For instance, not only is porn accessible through any internet enabled wireless device, but porn consumers are now producing vast amounts of their own amateur porn content and distribute it through these same devices.
The Northeast Modern Language Association will meet in Toronto, Ontario, for its 46th annual convention, held April 30 to May 3 2015. Every year, this event affords NeMLA's principal opportunity to carry on a tradition of lively research and pedagogical exchange in language and literature. This year's convention will include roundtable and caucus meetings, workshops, literary readings, film screenings, and guest speakers.
This one day conference is intended to explore the role of our concept of 'transition' in literary studies. This exploration
can be phrased in a series of questions, with the foremost being whether our cultural definitions are more reflective of
critical trends than of changes in artistic practice. For example, is James Joyce's Ulysses the high point of literary
modernism and, simultaneously, the beginning of postmodernism? Or does this retroactive critical summation do artistic
violence to an open text? If we agree that there are such things as transitions, then we might ask a further set of questions:

This issue aims to investigate the interplay between censorship and self-censorship in a variety of domains, from literary works to audio-visual media, from criticism to cultural mediation, in order to re-examine the relationship between censorship and artistic expression. This panel will investigate late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American home and design periodicals. We invite papers on all aspects and forms of home writing, including projects that look at women's magazines such as Godey's Lady's Book, Good Housekeeping, Ladies' Home Journal, House Beautiful, recipe periodicals, etc. We are especially interested in the production of visual culture and its political implications in these publications. Attitudes to photography have undergone a radical shift in recent times. Partly in response to these contemporary changes, historians, curators and photographic practitioners have begun to re-examine older forms of photography: exploring the wide variety of historical technologies and techniques, finding surprising ways in which images were manipulated and determining how an ideology of photographic realism was maintained. Yet there remains a need for scholars to explore questions of early photographic 'authorship', singularity and objectivity in much greater detail.
