CFP for Panel: Society for Cinema & Media Studies Conference March 25-28, 2015 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
"Gender and Genre Through a Post-9/11 Lens"
This panel seeks to engage with the repercussions that teleological imagery and metaphors of progress had on Victorian thought and culture. Progress, imagined as an accumulative, unidirectional movement through time, profoundly shaped the Victorian understanding of history, politics, social organization, and national destiny. Imagining civilization as developing in phases fomented a national obsession with documenting, collecting, and cataloguing people and things into discrete stages of development, and additionally demanded frequent cultural demonstrations of the nation's position at the pinnacle of this notional configuration.

MIDAS – Museum Interdisciplinary Studies is launching a call for papers for issue 5 for publication in Spring 2015. This issue will include a thematic dossier under the theme "Science and Art, SciArt: Museums, Laboratories, Scientists and Artists" with Marta Agostinho, Pedro Casaleiro and Herwig Turk as guest editors.
"Purity" and "Impurity" establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - "cleanliness of blood").
Call for Contributors to Edited Collection:
We invite chapter-length essays that analyze the American Revolution as a global phenomenon for a volume of essays; we are particularly interested in chapters that examine a range of texts and cultural practices from around the world. A major academic press has expressed strong interest in publishing the volume.
What does it mean to produce writing that is 'arguably not poetry,' but to be one of Canada's preeminent poets? Can we situate Carson, who actively resists stable notions of place, space, and temporality, in a contemporary Canadian context? Even more, her work often thematizes dislocation and eruption in imaginative and interdisciplinary ways. In order to understand one of Canada's most important literary voices, we aim to examine the connections and disconnections Carson makes visible in her prolific and ever-growing body of work. This roundtable will consider papers that address Carson's work, especially in light of Red Doc> (2013).
