2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Thomas Burger's translation of Jurgen Habermas' The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere. While Habermas' work had enjoyed some prominence, Burger's translation resulted in the proliferation of exciting scholarship that engaged Habermas' key concepts: the public sphere, communicative rationality, the ideal speech situation, and discourse ethics. Because so much of Habermas' work is indebted to eighteenth century thinkers, his ideas continues to resonate at this conference, whether in applications or critiques.
This roundtable will present perspectives, followed by what should be compelling conversation, about Habermas' continuing relevance or lack thereof.

The L-A-N-G-U-A-G-E school of poetry marked a shift—or a return to avant-garde practice—in American poetry in the 1970s. This seminar examines the continuing international significance of the L-A-N-G-U-A-G-E school of poetry in the wake of renewed politically engaged practices after the international years of protest of 2011-2013. At a moment when artistic movements across the world are taking up avant-garde and modernist strategies, what is the legacy of that earlier recovery of the avant-garde? Diverse poetic practices associated with the loosely defined movement edged toward the position, in Lyn Hejinian's words, that: "Language is nothing but meanings, and meanings are nothing but a flow of contexts.

More than an excellent, absurdist 2001 film set during the Bosnian War, "No Man's Land" is an idiom overused to inutility. It was a cliché long before I was born and learned what it meant or what a cliché was.

Assuming Gender would like to invite submissions to our forthcoming special issue: 'Neoliberal Gender, Neoliberal Sex'.
Neoliberalism has recently come to define a particular object of critical enquiry, especially after the financial crisis of 2008. Considered by some to have superseded terms such as postmodernism and globalisation, neoliberalism is no longer taken as merely an economic ideology adhered to by a rich elite but as a global norm that touches the lives of billions. In this special issue we aim to explore how neoliberalism, as a form of governmental rationality, goes beyond the realm of fiscal conduct and has affected, influenced or moulded the construction of representations of gender and sexuality in cultural production.

These are reinforced through language, the media, cultural events, social institutions and migration policies. Amidst all these dynamic and static forms of interaction, identities are built and consolidated.
