The 7th Annual North Carolina Symposium on Teaching Writing

The 2015 North Carolina Symposium on Teaching Writing invites proposals discussing writing-in-the-disciplines (WID) courses within writing programs. Recently, North Carolina's community college system, along with several institutions within the UNC system, have either transitioned entirely to WID-based programs or instituted WID-focused courses. Several other institutions across the region have well-established WID programs, sometimes occurring within institutional writing-across-the-curriculum initiatives. Many proponents argue that WID programs help introduce students to inquiry and discipline-specific conventions across their academic community. However, there is also scholarship questioning the transferability of student knowledge and skills from these programs. In the wake of the recent changes to curriculum in writing courses and programs in NC, we welcome proposals on topics concerning the implications and implementations of WID curriculums in writing programs and classrooms. Proposals focusing on practice, theory, and praxis are all encouraged.

Keynote: Our Keynote Speaker this year will be Dr. Elizabeth Wardle. Dr. Wardle is the current Chair of the Department of Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Central Florida. She is also the former director of the Writing Program there, as well as at the University of Dayton. Dr. Wardle has a rich research history in the areas of genre theory, the disciplinarity of Writing Studies, the scholarship of Writing Program Administration, and the transfer of writing-related knowledge. Her recent publications include the 2nd edition of Writing about Writing with Doug Downs (2014), "Taking up a Kairotic Moment: A Program Profile" in Composition Forum (2013), and "What is transfer?" in A Rhetoric for Writing Program Administrators edited by Rita Malenczyk (2013).
Specific Guidelines for Submission: Individual paper proposals should be 200-300 words in length. Panel submissions should not total more than 1000 words. All sessions will be 75 minutes in length, including Q&A. Individual proposals will be grouped into sets of three presentations per session. All sessions will be held in rooms with Internet access and projection capabilities. Please indicate any other technology requirements. We encourage participation from all faculty ranks, and we particularly encourage contingent faculty, K-12 faculty, TYC faculty, and graduate student participation.
The deadline for proposals for the 2015 Symposium is Friday, November 7, 2014.

PLEASE INCLUDE ALL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION – TITLE, NAME(S), AFFILIATION(S), AND EMAIL ADDRESS(ES) – IN THE EMAIL. THE ONLY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION IN THE PROPOSAL DOCUMENT ITSELF SHOULD BE THE TITLE.
