"Intoxication" - CFP

updated:
Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 11:01am
Ingrid Walker, University of Washington, Tacoma

Submissions invited to a special issue of NANO on "Intoxication."

This issue of New American Notes Online seeks to move critical attention beyond one-dimensional discourses that frame intoxication in terms of criminality, disease, or excessive indulgence. We hope to inspire a multi- and interdisciplinary conversation about the possibilities and realities of intoxication that have been less explored in academic and public discourse. Further, we invite contributions that uncouple intoxication from what has been an almost-essentialist relationship with addiction. In particular, we seek contributions that examine or theorize intoxication from new or unusual perspectives.

Permacultural Practices, panel proposed for the ASLE Eleventh Biennial Conference, June 23-27, 2015, University of Idaho

November 1, 2014. Permacultural Practices, panel proposed for the ASLE Eleventh Biennial Conference, June 23-27, 2015, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID.

Writing in 1978, founders Bill Mollison and David Holmgren coined the term permaculture—a portmanteau compounding and eliding "permanent agriculture"—to signify a design ethics suitable to an imminently low-energy future. In the intervening years, "permaculture" has become a truly global movement, inspiring home gardeners and farmers, intentional communities and design courses, and artists and activists, coming to refer more broadly to all aspects of culture, and referring as much to an ethics of life and the living as to principles of conscientious and efficient design.

Missing, presumed dead: absent mothers in the cultural imagination, 12-13 June 2015

updated:
Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 7:51am
Department of Language Studies, Umeå University, Sweden

An international conference on the trope of the absent mother in literary and visual texts from Antiquity to the present day.

The dead or absent mother is a recurring feature in Western cultural productions, from Greek myths through folktales, Shakespeare and Dickens to contemporary literature, television, and films such as Finding Nemo (2003) and The Road (2009). The mother might be dead at the outset, or die during the narrative. Her death might be a disaster, propelling the child into danger; a blessing, saving the child from an abusive or inappropriate parent and making way for a more suitable guardian; or of no consequence.
