[UPDATE] CFP: Toy Stories: The Toy as Hero

Abstracts are being welcomed for a proposed collection examining the toy as hero. Toys, a celebrated part of childhood and often key figures in children's imaginative play, have a fantastic history of heroism in print and on film. Open to examinations of literature, comics, and film, the collection seeks to be a repository of original essays that analyze the roles toys play as protectors of the child(ren) they love, as heroes of their own stories, or as champions for the greater good.

This special session takes the 2015 PAMLA conference theme of "Literature and Time" as an occasion for reconsidering a topic that has interested Faulkner critics for as long as there has been Faulkner criticism. We invite papers that explore the continuing relevance (endurance?) of time as a conceptual framework (formal, historical, psychological, philosophical, ecological, etc.) for understanding any aspect of Faulkner's work, life, or reception, as well as Faulkner's relevance for new critical models for thinking about time.

The College of Liberal Arts and the Graduate Programs in English, History, and World Languages at the University of Central Arkansas (Conway, AR) will host a Graduate Research Symposium focused on the theme of "The Humanities, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinarity" on Wednesday, April 22, and Thursday, April 23. (Presentations by UCA undergraduates will also take place on Thursday, April 23.) We invite abstracts on a variety of topics in the humanities and social sciences, and especially welcome papers that are interdisciplinary in scope.

How does contemporary South African literature critique, compromise with, or otherwise engage the nation's neoliberal dispensation? This special session proposal is intended to relate to the 2016 MLA Conference's "Literature and its Publics" theme.

Potential paper topics:
--literature's relationship to citizenship and civil society;
--apartheid in new forms;
--the neoliberal city (Cape Town and Johannesburg);
--SA as a tourist attraction;
--the legacies of Gordimer and Coetzee;
--"post-Western" capitalisms (e.g., the Indian Ocean economy).

The collection seeks to explore how immigration to Ireland has redefined perceptions of Irish communities and localities, performance traditions, and patterns of remembrance in the period between the mid-1990s and the present.
