MLA 2016 (1/7 - 1/10) Special Session: Post-Apartheid South African Literature and Globalization
How does contemporary South African literature critique, compromise with, or otherwise engage the nation's neoliberal dispensation? This special session proposal is intended to relate to the 2016 MLA Conference's "Literature and its Publics" theme.
Potential paper topics:
--literature's relationship to citizenship and civil society;
--apartheid in new forms;
--the neoliberal city (Cape Town and Johannesburg);
--SA as a tourist attraction;
--the legacies of Gordimer and Coetzee;
--"post-Western" capitalisms (e.g., the Indian Ocean economy).
