1968 and Global Cinema

Although scholarship exists on the late 1960s New Waves, especially on in French New Wave vis-à-vis May '68 in Paris, scholarship that puts cinemas on 1968 into dialogue with one another across national boundaries is surprisingly lacking.

Well-known are the celebrated productions of French New Wave, especially of Truffaut, Godard and Marker; of British New Wave, and the so-called Angry Young Men; of Brazilian cinema novo, and especially of Rocha; and of Czech New Wave. Often, film of the global 1960s has screened at film festivals or as film series.

To some extent, the dearth reflects the disciplinary boundaries set by departments each devoted to a national linguistic, literary and cinematic tradition. Yet cinemas around 1968 often engaged — drew inspiration from and in turn inspired — the new wave of another country, in politics content and aesthetic innovations.

The proposed panel seek to remedy this gap by examining this interplay in cinemas of the global sixties. It is our wager that it could generate a variety of new insights into film history and film style.

Possible paper topics might include but are not limited to the following:

- the long sixties (not solely "1968" proper)

- the interplay among cinemas of disparate geographic spaces

- minor or sub-national cinemas

- gender and the sixties

- sexuality and the sixties

- class and the sixties

- new wave and contemporary national cinema

- sound and sixties new waves

- the sixties and experimental cinema

The panels dovetail with a proposed edited volume on 1968 in Global Cinema that aims to fill this gap in scholarship. If you are interested in being considered for the edited volume, please indicate it, send an additional 500 word abstract for the volume and a cv. We will notify those who submitted abstracts for the volume of a decision by September 15, 2015. Articles will be due by December 31, 2015.
