THE WORLDS OF JOHN THELWALL
The Fordham Romanticism Group and the John Thelwall Society invite paper proposals for a one-day symposium to be held at Fordham University in New York City on 25 June 2016. Building on the inaugural John Thelwall Society conference held at the University of Notre Dame's London Center in 2014, "The Worlds of John Thelwall" will consider how Thelwall and his contemporaries thought about the global scene. Papers might attend to how the work of Thelwall and others relates to:
• North America, South America, and the Caribbean, with attention to issues such as the slave trade, the American Revolution, European imperial and missionary activity across the Americas, and the transatlantic book trade.
• India and Asia more broadly, with attention to British Imperial expansion and Christian missionary endeavors.
• Australia and New Zealand, including writing on emigration and penal colonies.
• The "four nations" conception of the Romantic era (England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales), which might help us to think in new ways about Thelwall's writing on Britain past and present.
Papers that address the work of Thelwall's contemporaries are also welcome. Modest bursaries are available for graduate student participants. Please submit titles and abstracts of 250 words to firstname.lastname@example.org by 15 January 2016. Questions may be directed to the organizers, John Bugg (email@example.com) and Sarah Zimmerman (firstname.lastname@example.org).
