Disquiet: An Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference

The recent passing of Chantal Akerman dealt an irrecoverable blow to the history of cinema. For nearly the past half-century, Akerman continually produced provocative work that meditated on concepts of home, belonging, and identity, while consistently investigating these via contemporary formats and technologies. Her latest and final film, No Home Movie, found Akerman probing these issues anew; reconciling distances through the use of Skype, developing her self-understanding through conversations with her mother, amongst others. This conference, designed to celebrate Akerman's memory, focuses on one of her most consistent and deeply examined themes: displacement.

"The imaginary" invokes spectres, memories, what is sensed, felt, and wanted, the fanciful, visionary, shadow, illusory, what is not visible or legible, a past and a future we can not perceive. This conference features keynote speakers Mya Poe of Northeastern University and Donald Pease of Dartmouth College.
For Lacan, the imaginary is the beginning: "I began with the Imaginary, I then had to chew on the story of the Symbolic ... and I finished by putting out for you this famous Real." For sociologist John B.Thompson, the social imaginary is "the creative and symbolic dimension of the social world, the dimension through which human beings create their ways of living together and their ways of representing their collective life."
The editors seek chapters for a new collection entitled Undressing Sexual Taboo in the Liberal Arts: Discussing the Digital-Textual Unmentionables for publication by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2017 (currently under contract).

This inclusive interdisciplinary event is aimed to explore the mechanisms of humour, its elements of surprise and contradiction that appeal to human nature, circulating sameness and otherness altogether: through the agency of positive disposition, the inside(r) finds external expression, just the same as the outside(r) is incorporated within.

Mantis is soliciting reviews and critical pieces. We publish ~2000 word reviews of contemporary poetry in English or in translation and other critical pieces treating issues in contemporary poetry and poetics (surveys of trends in contemporary poetry, interviews, theoretically oriented reflections, etc.)

Philosophy, being untimely, is inexorably embedded in time, dedicated to the future. For Chiasma's third issue, we will look for essays engaging with the future – as an object for philosophy, as a hermeneutic of philosophy, and also in terms of the future of philosophy – from an interdisciplinary background.
We invite proposals for the Fifth Annual Conference of the EBSN, which will take place in Manchester, UK, from 27‐29 June, at The Wonder Inn (http://www.thewonderinn.co.uk), in the heart of the city.
As always, papers on any aspect of Beat creativity are welcomed, but especially in relation to two central themes: music and science. The themes are reflected in our two confirmed conference keynotes: C.P. Lee, legendary Manchester musician and musicologist, and Andrew Lees, Professor of Neurology.
The International Conference "War Reflections: Precedents and Consequences of WWII in Literature and the Arts" sets out to study works of literature, cinema, music and the visual arts related to the Second World War and the consequences derived from it.
This interdisciplinary conference intends to be a meeting point for specialists in literature and different arts in order to foster debate around the artistic representations of WWII. Thus, we propose new approaches to a historical event that has had great impact not only on society, politics, and history, but also on literature and the arts.
