Call for Papers: Women and the Rising (Chair, Elizabeth Brewer Redwine, Department of English)

We are seeking papers for a panel entitled “Women and the Rising” as part of a conference, In Celebration of the 1916 Easter Rising: Art, Articulation, and Inspiration, at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ on October 21st, 2016.

Stories of women’s involvement in the rising abound, but most focus on Constance Markievicz at Stephen’s Green, ignoring the many women who risked bullet-fire to bring messages, food, and medical care to the rebels.

Recent scholarship on this topic by Lucy McDiarmid, Clair Wills, and the Waking the Feminist group is unearthing exciting new evidence of women’s active participation in Easter Week.

For this panel, papers are especially welcome that deal with both the famous women of the Rising and the lesser known female participants, such as Rose McNamara, Helena Molony, Winifred Carney, Julia Grenan, Margaret Kinnider, and Marie Perloz.  Possible topics include women’s groups Inghinidhe na hEireann and Cumann na mBan, media representations of the women involved in the events of Easter Week, and links between the theatre world and the women of the Rising.  Please email abstracts of approximately 500 words to Elizabeth.Redwine@shu.edu by August 1st, 2016.
