We invite proposals for any papers dealing with Gothic literature, culture and film. This session welcomes proposals on a wide variety of topics, with particular consideration granted to papers that engage with the 2016 conference theme of "Archives, Libraries, Properties." Possible foci might include sociohistorical context, intellectual heritage, culture and circulation, and textual materiality in (and of) the Gothic.

This panel will explore how institutions dedicated to the collection, preservation, and circulation of material knowledge manage sexuality. Sex materials create conflicting imperatives for librarians. As one collections curator at the New York Public Library recently told a reporter, "We needed to collect life as it was lived… It was always part of our mandate." Yet librarians at NYPL also had a mandate to protect the mass of pornographic magazines, pulp novels, and fliers they collected by carefully regulating access to them. Until recently, sex materials at NYPL labeled with three stars required supervision. That one example illustrates how sequestration generally determines who can read about sex and under what conditions.

As a medium which excels at inducing its audience to fully identify with the images on screen and which, however, can also trick and enthrall viewers through the use of various effects, cinema is particularly well suited to portraying aspects of the fantastic, whether it be ghosts and monsters, futuristic scientific advances, or the depiction of the amazing bodily feats of martial arts masters. Though, to be sure, the fantastic in cinema may be seen as a mode of escape from the ennui or drudgery of modern life in a post-traditional society, we need not think of it only in these critical terms.

This panel focuses on the instability of meaning in Old English elegies. Because queerness bears nuanced connotations that require individual definition, this session is open to a broad understanding of the term “queer” and how queer theory enhances our understanding of the elegies in Anglo-Saxon culture. Approaches may include, but are not limited to, manuscript history and paleography, generic conventions and their reception, as well as literary innovations within specific texts.

In 2015, the University of Edinburgh Press launched a multivolume series of scholarly, refereed anthologies entitled ReFocus. Edited by Robert Singer (CUNY) Gary D. Rhodes (University of Central Florida), and Stefanie Van de Peer (University of Exeter), each book focuses on a critically overlooked film director who worked in the studio system, independent cinema, mainstream cinema, experimental filmmaking, or the documentary tradition. Volumes published so far in this series include: Susanne Bier, Xavier Dolan, Francis Veber, Teuvo Tulio, Sohrab Shadid Saless, and Pedro Costa, with many more in preparation.
