We are inviting submissions for a forthcoming edited volume that analyse and survey folk narratives from India’s Northeast. The eight north-eastern states—Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Manipur and Sikkim—have a wealth of narratives that are likely to function as alternative history beyond the generic cultural and geographical assumptions of the history of the Northeast as part of a ‘greater’ Indian history. The polyphonic potential of these narratives can be explored in multiple ways including historical, literary, sociological and political, but not exclusively such. However, despite the existence of a substantial amount of research on the cultures of the Northeast, as well as the folk cultures, there has been no cogent attempt at reviewing the variety of cultural and historical artefacts that may be found in the folk narratives of these states.

The present volume seeks to address this lacuna by surveying folk narratives as evolving synergies that have developed into anthropological and ethnological records largely denied appropriate status. As such, the suggested areas include sociohistorical, political, anthropological studies of folk narratives, oral, visual and written, and how these narratives have subsequently been reconstructed through contemporary literature and in popular culture.

Routledge has shown preliminary interest in the book. Submissions should be on folk narratives as we are unable to accommodate purely anthropological or historical studies. The submissions should be within 6000-9000 words and adhering to the latest MLA Handbook. In case of images accompanying the text, please ensure that appropriate permissions are obtained before submission. Interviews of scholars in the field are invited too. Submissions should contain a cover page with a short bio within 150 words, affiliation and details for communiqué, and an abstract within 250 words.
