Diasporic Cinema: Multigenerational Narratives, Migration, and Identity in Asian America
The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival (PAAFF) is seeking proposals for papers and
presentations on the theme of “Multigenerational Narratives, Migration, and Identity.” This
inaugural conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from November 14–15, 2016 in
conjunction with PAAFF 2016, the largest Asian American & Pacific Islander film festival on the
East Coast.
We seek proposals from scholars across a variety of fields such as Asian Studies, Asian
American Studies, Cinema and Media Studies, and Visual Art and Culture Studies. Proposals
may discuss the ways that diasporic cultural identities are formed, performed, and represented
and may pursue the topic from any disciplinary angle. Both contemporary and historical
analyses can be included. Papers examining Asian, Asian diasporic, and Asian American
subjects
are welcome, but participants are encouraged to address issues related to migration
and diaspora. We especially welcome work that addresses the cinemas, visual culture, and/or
identities of Iran and the Pacific Islands. Proposals should address “Asian
communities/individuals in diaspora” as well as visual culture in some way. Suggested areas
include, but are not limited to:
●multigenerational narratives
●migration and diaspora
●gender, class, ethnic, religious, and spatial dynamics
●agricultural & food issues
●medical issues, approaches to physical and mental health care, and access to medicine
among immigrant communities
●technology of sound and image, e.g., music, sound effects, accents, or virtual reality
●home movies or amateur image making
Abstracts of 350 words or fewer should be submitted by September 1, 2016 in .doc or .pdf
format along with a short bio of 150 words or less to rob@phillyasianfilmfest.org. The organizing
committee will review abstracts and participants will be notified by September 16.
Further questions about the topic and selection criteria may be sent to the same email address.
