Call for Abstracts: Edited Collection on Film Festivals
This call for abstracts is for an upcoming book project on film festivals. The editor is looking for papers on a host of topics from both academics and festival professionals, including but not limited to:
Possible Topics:
The role of the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations)
The history of European festivals (Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Karlovy Vary etc.)
The history of North American festivals (Toronto, SXSW, Sundance, etc.)
The history of South American, African and/or Asian festivals
The rise of smaller, niche festivals
Festivals' non-profit and for-profit status and its effects
The way festivals are changing the aesthetics of film
The importance of business-based festivals/marketplaces to the industry
Audience vs. Business-based festivals
Distribution and festivals
Stardom, celebrity and festivals
Interviews with leading figures in the festival circuit (curators, art directors, juries, etc.)
The importance of premiere status
Competition vs non-competition festivals
The festival calendar
Submitting films to festivals
The cultural relevance of festivals
The role of digital technology in the festival process

About the editor: Tricia Jenkins is an associate professor of film and television at Texas Christian University and the author of The CIA in Hollywood: How the Agency Shapes Film and Television (University of Texas Press, 2012, 2016), a 2012 Choice Award Winner. She is currently teaching a course on film festivals and has been involved in numerous festivals, including Cannes, in the past several years. She is also the book reviews editor for The Journal of Popular Culture.
