Victorian-Modernism. An unlikely match that many might consider intrinsically oxymoronic. In this panel, we invite Victorian and Modernist literary scholars to a productive conversation with a dual purpose. First, to trouble the boundaries between these two periods through papers that treat Victorian and Modernist literary texts as companions rather than as strictly periodized texts in opposition. Second, to examine representations of the city as a key site that initiates this dialogue.

Subashish Bhattacharjee, Jawaharlal Nehru University
deadline for submissions:

We require additional essays for an edited volume on queer visual cultures contracted with Universitas Press and due to be published by the end of this year. Essays should focus on representations and portrayals of, or appropriations of the queer subject on stage, on screen or through other visual cultural mediums. The essays could discuss individual works or artists or attempt to present a study of genres or a cluster of works. At this stage we are looking for an additional 5-6 papers that deal with the queer subject on film and on stage/theatrical portrayals of the queer, queer art or the queer in art, New Queer Cinema, installation art and the queer, queering dance, and the queer in television.

Mantis at Stanford: call for poetry translations

updated:
Tuesday, August 30, 2016 - 11:29am
Mantis: A Journal of Poetry, Criticism, and Translation
deadline for submissions:
Thursday, September 15, 2016

Mantis is interested in publishing translations that will expose our readers to compelling and unfamiliar poems. All languages will be considered--we've featured work from Tamil, Italian, Danish, and Farsi--and all translations appear side-by-side with the original.

Please submit your translations (with the original) via Submittable as a single file. We'd also appreciate a brief note introducing the poet you're translating. This can appear in your cover letter or within your submission itself. This should help us contextualize the poet in question and would--we imagine--become the basis for the short introductions that we run with our translated poems.

deadline for submissions:

Since its publication in 2014, Canadian author Emily St John Mandel’s Station Eleven has attracted enthusiastic critical responses. This post-apocalyptic novel won an Arthur C. Clarke Award for Science Fiction in 2015 and was shortlisted for many other awards, including the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award, and the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction. In this OLH Special Collection, we seek to explore Station Eleven’s position within twenty-first-century writing.
