Literary Islands: Isolation and Connection

updated:

Northeast Modern Language Association Annual Conference
deadline for submissions:

How have authors represented island worlds from the Antarctic to Manhattan, from the islands of the climate justice threatened mid-Atlantic coast to those of the Pacific rim, from romanticized islands off the coast of Maine, Scotland, or Alaska to the enormous islands of Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan? Ecocriticism and landscape theory have not focused on the intersection of water and land, especially when water surrounds land. Literary representations of islands offer a novel and fruitful focus for ecological investigation.

Ruin Porn: Essays on the Obsession with Decay (Edited Collection)

updated:

Siobhan Lyons, Macquarie University
deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, November 1, 2016

The newly-coined term ‘ruin porn’ provokes both obsession and criticism; signalling the eventual decay to which we will all invariably succumb, contemporary ruins inspire fascination and fear, a furious denial of our collective immortality and a wary flirtation with death. Contemporary ruins such as those found in Detroit and Chernobyl attract thousands of ‘ruin tourists’ or ‘ruin photographers’, many of whom attempt to engage on a meaningful level with the existential threat that these sights arouse. The terrifying beauty that we associate with contemporary ruins appears to be a modern symptom of the post-natural, architectural sublime.

At the “East Indians in the Caribbean Conference” in Trinidad in 1979, Sam Selvon disarmingly titled his opening address “Three into One Can’t Go—East Indian, Trinidadian or West Indian.” He presented the contradictions apparent in competing discourses of identification as the descendants of Indian indentured labourers sought to define themselves in their national and regional contexts. Selvon’s underlying question of how (formerly) indentured labourers establish a sense of belonging in their new environment is applicable to other sites of indentureship like Guyana, Jamaica, Mauritius, Suriname, and Fiji. Another identifying label that should be added to Selvon’s triad is coolie, a pejorative that some Indians have sought to reclaim.

International Intrigue: Plotting Espionage as Cultural Artifact

When former head of the MI5 Stella Rimington compared literary critics to the KGB, she might have extended the analogy to include the cultures, histories, and theories of espionage. Her elision highlights the growing interest in the genre and its international reach, as it calls into question divisions between nation states and ideologies and suggests new ways of thinking about relations between gender, race, citizenship, nationhood, refugee, agency, and subjectivity.
