Jamesian Cultural Anxiety in the East and in the West

In his lifetime, Nietzsche referred to over 150 nineteenth-century writers in both his published writings and Nachlaß. Nietzsche’s use of nineteenth-century fiction and poetry ranges from somewhat nonchalant to extremely systematic. Indeed, the cornerstone of his “Advent of European Nihilism” in the late 1880s is the decline or decadence of literature during Nietzsche’s lifetime.
The panel attempts to focus on passages, individual novels or poems, and complete bodies of work in order to assess Nietzsche’s use of these texts in his philosophical project.

CALL FOR PAPERS CONFERENCE ON THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE PAINE COLLEGE AUGUSTA, GANOVEMBER 2-4, 2016 The Department of Humanities at Paine College is requesting proposals for the 20th Annual Conference on the Harlem Renaissance to be held on the campus of historic Paine College. The theme for 2016 is “Precursors, Periods, and Postscripts: Critical Thought, Beliefs, Productions, and Activism before, during, and after the Harlem Renaissance.” The focus for presentations will center on the literature, history, philosophy, art, and music, as well as inter- and cross-disciplinary approaches from the social and political sciences, economics, and STEM.
Proposals for both Panels and Individual Papers are now being accepted for Southwest Popular/American Culture’s 38th Annual Conference in Albuquerque, NM. We encourage and invite undergraduates to prepare a brief paper (15 minutes) on any topic that is covered by existing Areas within the conference. National Institute of Technology, Silchar with generous support form the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is organizing a Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) course titled Conquest of Knowledge: The British in India during 16-22 December 2016.
Cultural institutions are custodians of important collections of the material and natural world. They are repositories of material culture that reflect the cultures and practices of humanity and the natural world, revealing the fantastic, the foibles and the strange, in addition to the efforts and products of great ingenuity. Such collections, in various formats from the ephemeral to the digital, from the bespoke to the mass produced, are accessed by many different publics, including those seeking to understand or connect with elements of popular culture.
