CONFERENCE ON THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE PAINE COLLEGE

AUGUSTA, GA

NOVEMBER 2-4, 2016

 

The Department of Humanities at Paine College is requesting proposals for the 20th Annual Conference on the Harlem Renaissance to be held on the campus of historic Paine College. The theme for 2016 is “Precursors, Periods, and Postscripts: Critical Thought, Beliefs, Productions, and Activism before, during, and after the Harlem Renaissance.” The focus for presentations will center on the literature, history, philosophy, art, and music, as well as inter- and cross-disciplinary approaches from the social and political sciences, economics, and STEM.

Possible areas of inquiry include but are not limited to:

·         defining/framing of the Modern Era, the Harlem Renaissance Era, and the Post- Renaissance Eras;

·         nineteenth century and early twentieth century thinkers and movements in the U.S. and abroad;

·         post-war thinkers and movements in the U.S. and abroad;

·         critics and critiques of the Harlem Renaissance Era;

·         philosophical, religious/spiritual, political, and social thought regarding freedom;

·         post-Reconstruction, early twentieth century and post-war cultural expressions of freedom;

·         medical apartheid during the Post-Reconstruction and Jim Crow Eras;

·         psychological and/or sociological impact of Black self-determination during 19th and 20th century freedom movements;

·         psychological and/or sociological impact of racism and racial segregation during the 19th and 20th century freedom struggles;

·         literatures of the enslaved, disenfranchised, and oppressed; and

·         other perspectives on the theme or on the Harlem Renaissance

Submission Requirements: Individual proposals/abstracts should be no more than 250 words and panel abstracts should be no more than 750 words. A clear explanation of the significance of the presentation is requested. Indicate all participants, status of each participant (professor, independent scholar, organizer, artist, entrepreneur, graduate student, or undergraduate student) and tentative title/focus of the panel and/or individual presentation.
